Independent Living Services
LSS Independent Living Services offers a strong and consistent support system to young adults ages 16 to 21 while they learn skills to be self-sufficient adults.
Independent Living Programs include:
Community Resource Program provides independent living skills through one-to-one education, workshops and conferences. It helps youth to access funding for post-secondary education, housing assistance and start-up support for graduating high school seniors.
New Alternatives helps young adults learn to manage their severe mental illness by providing housing, case management, counseling, nursing care and medication management in a safe place to live with 24-hour staffing.
Young Voices is a youth-led statewide group that seeks motivated individuals to provide VOICES—Vision, Opportunities, Ideas, Creativity, Enthusiasm and Support—to those in foster homes, placements or independent living arrangements.
REACH, Resources & Education Adolescents Choosing Healthy Behaviors targets youth ages 10-19 who are considered to be “at-risk.” REACH projects replicate effective, evidence-based program models that have been proven to delay sexual activity among youth, reduce pregnancy, and reduce incidents of sexually transmitted infections.
FORGED—Fostering Others to Restore, Guide, Educate and Develop their own well-being. This program is a youth-led peer support group working toward improving public health for South Dakota adolescents and communities. Forged is the youth voice advocating for youth-friendly health access and education, and discussing public health issues facing youth today, such as Mental Health, Suicide Prevention, Healthy Relationships and Sexual Health. The South Dakota Department of Health works to promote, protect and improve the health and wellbeing of all South Dakotans. Suicide Prevention Lifeline reduces suicides and suicide attempts through statewide and local efforts . Call 800-273-TALK (8255) to find relief.
South Dakota Housing for the Homeless
As providers of homeless and housing services, there are various homeless assistance programs available and administered by the South Dakota Housing Development that you can use to provide emergency services, transitional services or permanent support housing. Call 800-664-1349 for support.
Indian Health Service
IHS programs raise the physical, mental, social, and spiritual health of American Indians and Alaska Natives by providing federal health care and a comprehensive health service delivery system.
Urban Indian Health
SDUIH provides integrated clinical health services to support the medical, behavioral, and cultural needs in Pierre and Sioux Falls, SD.
The SD QuitLine helps tobacco users become tobacco-free with free tools and services. Call 866-SDQUITS for direct support.
DSS Mental Health
The South Dakota Department of Social Services provides relief for behavioral health, child care, child protection, economic assistance, and healthcare.

LSS behavioral health centers are conveniently located throughout South Dakota. The main offices are located in Aberdeen, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Watertown. Satellite offices are located in Brookings, Milbank, Mitchell, Sisseton and Sturgis.
